Dick, thanks for your really good post, you did a better job than I could with much of the explanations.


But I do have a couple of quibbles:

Well, it is interesting to see that insects are left out?  That is certainly what I found when trying to learn about IMI metabolites in honeybees.  I also could not find information on the detailed steps of metabolism for any organism.  Are they just not required to publish those, or don't they know?

Genes in their normal state are turned off.

Nope.  Some are on unless turned off, some are off unless turned on.  But the rest of your comment after that works just fine. It's complicated out there.
