Spring into Beekeeping!

The Southern Adirondack Beekeepers Association (SABA) will host a spring
seminar March 22, 2003, 9:00 – 4:30 on the State University of New York
(SUNY) Albany campus.

Dr. Nicholas Calderone, Associate Professor of Entomology of Cornell
University will speak on Spring and Summer Management and recent
developments at Dyce Labs, where his latest research deals with IPM
strategies against Varroa mites. His second presentation will deal with
spring and summer management.

Kirk Webster, northern Vermont commercial beekeeper and queen breeder, will
tell us about Genetics and Management for a Northern Apiary. By breeding
his own queens from survivor hives, Kirk has been able to bring 100 hives
through since 1998 without any mite treatments.

Dr. John Skinner, Associate Professor of Entomology at the University of
Tennessee, will speak about his and others’ research on physical, genetic,
and isolation techniques of IPM against Varroa mites, and on the lighter
side of pollination.

Dr. James Tew (Jim Tew) is an Associate Professor of Entomology at Ohio
State University and a well-known author of several books and innumerable
Bee Culture articles. His first talk will be “Which queen for which hive?”
and his second “What is it about beekeeping, anyway?” This is a question we
all probably have wondered about.

A raffle or silent auction of numerous items donated by dealers will take
place as well.

Cost : $25 per person or $40 for couples. After March 8, cost is $35 per
person or $50 for a couple. Cost includes a morning coffee/snack break. At
lunch, attendees can buy their lunches nearby.

Hotel: A “block” of discounted rooms is reserved at the Marriott Fairfield
Inn, just across the street. When people call to reserve rooms, they should
call by March 7 and mention the "beekeeping seminar" to get the discount.
The rooms are available for March 21 and/or March 22.
