Used carpet works very well around hives to stop grass and weeds. Plus
it leaves a "clean" area in front of the hive where you can see what
happens during the year, especially winter. The number of dead bees can
be easily seen on the carpet.
I use a riding mower and find that quick passes with the grass discharge
away from the hives usually attracts little attention. But, occasionally
they like to let you know they care and give you their very best. Pick a
good sunny day when they are more interested in foraging than what is
going on around the hives.
