Dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of myself and my co-authors Laura Ng, Jocelyn Lee, Veronica Peterson, and Barb Voss, I’m excited to let you know that our new Annual Review of Anthropology article, “Race and Racism in Archaeologies of Chinese American Communities,” has just been published:

http://www.annualreviews.org/eprint/I35GDXAICU24NE4BYKNY/full/10.1146/annurev-anthro-041320-014548

This article provides a critical review of current research and charts future directions for antiracist Chinese diaspora archaeologies. Notably, this is the first such review article in which the majority of the authors are Chinese American. We view our subjectivities as integral to our review, analysis, and critique of the field. Empowered by the work of Black and Indigenous archaeologists, we employ an Asian American Studies praxis to center discussions of race, racism, racialization, power, and community.

In writing this essay, we discuss examples from Chinese diaspora archaeology to highlight best practices for antiracist and intersectional interventions in archaeology. Clear definitions, well-defined sections, and explicit methodology all help make the article accessible for classroom use and as an entrypoint for those new to the subfield.

For some quick takeaways from our article, please see Laura Ng’s Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/cocalola/status/1584892537382346752?s=20&t=DmKkME7Ygtlj2_Kv2Ts7wQ, which charts out six directions for building an antiracist field.

We would be grateful if you could help spread the word about this first-of-its-kind publication by sharing this announcement with other archaeologists, students, and interested scholars. We would especially appreciate your assistance in reaching those who are not likely to receive the Annual Review of Anthropology contents alerts, such as current students, early career archaeologists, cultural resource management archaeologists, and archaeologists outside the United States.

The article abstract is provided below.

Sincerely,

Kelly, Laura, Jocelyn, Veronica, and Barb

Race and Racism in Archaeologies of Chinese American Communities

Kelly N. Fong 方少芳, Laura W. Ng 伍穎華, Jocelyn Lee 李紫瑄, Veronica L. Peterson 孫美華, and Barbara L. Voss

This article provides a critical review of archaeological research that addresses race and racism in Chinese American communities. Future directions for Chinese diaspora archaeologies include employing an Asian American studies praxis that centers community-engaged research, using diasporic frameworks, and applying emic language to naming material culture and identities. Other innovative archaeological scholarship on the racialization of Chinese Americans reframes Chinese American communities as part of larger multiethnic neighborhoods, highlights gender and sexuality, and traces the transpacific connections of Chinese transmigrants. The interventions outlined provide archaeologists who are engaged in the study of the Chinese American past with the pathways needed to begin practicing antiracist Chinese diaspora archaeologies.
