Yes, I agree with your point re supplements in general, and Peter's previous comments about "replacement diets". 

One relevant observation to this thread, though, re "data":  particularly in the last 5-10 years I've been amazed by how much of what we've previously been told by nutritional and medical experts prior to that (presumably based on science and data) has now been found to be wrong, and we're now being told the exact opposite.  Everything from the makeup of the balanced diet "food pyramid" to the utility and frequency of recommended cancer-screening tests, and moving the goal-post re what is considered optimal blood pressure and cholesterol levels.  I asked my GP about those ... he believes a lot of that is driven by Big Pharma.  <sigh>
