Here in Ontario it's just as bad, and worse still, clubs are havens for
the stumbling unsuccessful saving the world .
Over and over again I am contacted by those who want to get into bees and
buy nucs etc.
Of course here the prerequisite is registration with the Gov't by getting
a beekeeping number.
I also try to be honest with the momentary potentials.
I ask if they've taken a beekeeping course and if not steer them in that
direction and unlike many
I refuse to sell to anyone that isn't registered .
The question I always have asked makes people think .
"Are you prepared to raise a litter of dogs?"
9 out o10 will say no
so I end up with 10 out of 100 that will move forth.
and my experience over the years has been that 1 in 10 is a good beekeeper
and those I mentor.
Those nine that said no speak honestly and begin to realize that it's that
involved.
All this to this point takes 10 min of my time.
I also there after , throw in the facts that one has to be ready in life to
make the commitment.
If they still have a mortgage and kids that need lessons and hockey etc
and expenses
and no disposable income then forget it for a while.
And you what, they appreciate that aspect.
An oh so true, beer money, not mortgage money.
Some years it's water only and no beer.
