A great explanation.
What you described was why I, coming out of childhood, got educated in one
of the many fields of science
Bunsen burners alcohol lamps, litmus paper, I even have some erlenmyer
flasks somewhere
from those days..
But having worked with, for and now in retirement hang around some
if I may again "real" scientists,  I guess it's the adjective "citizen" for
me at least that has
a negative connotation
