For those interested in types resistance to varroa mites, an account
of how the trait was found in a few colonies out of 43 headed by
random single drone inseminations of queens.

Briefly, some notable points, but read if you want more details:
1) Only a few colonies showed decreases of mite populations in
controlled tests in which mites and bees were quantified.
2) Non reproduction of mites in colonies correlated well with mite
population growth. Other traits did not.
3) The non-reproduction of mites was more influenced by the adult bees
in a colony than by the brood.
Since then, a lot more has been clarified, but a lot was sorted out in
that first paper.
