I've been told that the greater wax moth larvae are actually raised for
fish bait in some central states and, as a result some moths escape and
fly around.
Moths can also be blown a long way on the wind. When we were many
hundreds of miles off the Atlantic coast on a sailboat, songbirds blown
offshore occasionally landed on our boat. I was told that some had been
blown over from Africa. The birds were exhausted.
Things like moths travel long distances on the wind.
