As far as the UK is concerned the answer is simple - the plug was pulled on 
the funding.  When more funding for beekeeping research was found, that 
research was not considered to deserve any money - I believe that 'pure' 
research won over 'applied' research, probably due to the interests of those 
entrusted with allocating the money.

All very sad when the UK first saw the possibilities and were so far ahead 
in the game; but that is typical of this country - come up with the ideas 
and then fail to capitalise on them.
