At a lecture delivered to the BIBBA AGM in April 2008 (I think)  Steven 
Martin described how a mutation of the sodium pathway in the genome of a  
varroa mite enabled it to be unaffected by the chemicals applied. As has been  
pointed out, mutations are usually deleterious to organisms compared with the  
'standard' genome so they don't thrive as well; however, in this instance, 
there  seems to have been no such handicap.
