Lori: Are vasospasms a possible cause of this mother's sore breasts? This sounds similar to descriptions that I have read. A tendency towards cold toes and fingers or any other circulation problems may be another indicator. I sometimes get vasospasms in my breasts when I swim in cold water and it is very painful. It feels like they have been beaten with paddles. The pain subsides slowly as they warm up. If this this is the cause, the mother may benefit from staying warm while nursing and applying heat to her breasts. Calcium and magnesium supplements may also be helpful (from a LLL source: 2000mg calcium and 1000mg magnesium in divided doses over the course of the day). I believe that there are medications to help with this condition is these measures don't help.
