James Tobin said of conductor Horst Stein: >I should look this up, to be sure, but I believe he was Sibelius' >son-in-law. The recording is a good one. You're thinking of Jussi Jalas (still alive? I dunno), who also made some good Sibelius recordings in the 70's that are on a different London/Decca 2-for-1. I know Jalas also made some other Sibelius recordings besides these, but I don't know what they were, and these are the only ones on CD (the set contains the 2 Tempest suites, the King Christian suite, The Swanwhite suite, 4 pieces from Kuolema, the complete Scenes Historiques, and the 20' Scaramouche reduction which Jalas himself devised with Sibelius' approval and which is good to listen to when you're not up for Jarvi's disc of the complete version). Jalas is one of those who says they saw the pages of the 8th before Sibelius destroyed it. Jon Lewis [log in to unmask]
