Tracey I am sorry that you have this condition and have to make this difficult decision. Reading Hale, it seems that bromocriptine is a drug w/ many side effects FOR THE MOM. However, it says 6% remains in maternal plasma and it reports on one mom who took it during lactation w/ no untoward effects in the infant. It seems that if you are hyperprolactinemic and take the med, you may still have enough milk for the baby. The small amt in the plasma may be ok for the baby. This you would have to discuss w/ the docs and pharmacist. The bigger concern seems to be not the overproduction of prolactin but the effects on you optic nerve/vision. You should be able to get an idea of the progression of this type of thing, based on your situation and what you could likely expect. Maybe more frequent monitoring (monthly? biweekly?) would allow you to continue bf for as long as possible with very careful watchful waiting and intervention when it is needed. I will hope that the regression is what happens and all will be ok. Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
