Theresa, I am not sure about other states, but in MS, we do not have coupons. We pick up our WIC at a food distribution center. Those responsible take great care to shop judiciously, and many items change (brand names) frequently. The $$ not spent on food items is provided to our Breastfeeding program. These $ are additional to our staffing budget, and are used to provide hospital grade pumps to the moms of preemies. But, I digress. These food packages contain: Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women: 28 quarts total milk products..... 1 pound cheese 1 box nonfat dry milk 1-12oz can evap milk 16 1qt boxes UHT 2% milk 3-16oz cartons pastuerised eggs 36 oz cereal 9-8oz cartons juice concentrate 1# dry beans/peas OR 1-8oz jar peanut butter. If Exclusively BF (not receiving any ABM from WIC) add to the above package: 1-8oz carton juice concentrate 1# dry peas/beans OR 1-8oz jar peanut butter 4-6oz cans tuna 2-16oz cans carrotts 1# cheese Non-Breastfeeding postpartum women receive: 12 qts UHT 2% milk 1# cheese 1 pkg dry nonfat milk 1 120z can evap milk 3 16oz cartons past. eggs 36oz cereal 6-8oz cartons juice concentrate I am not a nutritionist, so I do not know what % of their diet this package is supposed to represent. I know I find it hard to use all up, but I do not eat my daily reccommended minimums. This package certainly does not represent 3-5 servings of fruit or vegetables each day, even if you consider juice a fruit. I am not much of a cereal person, so I am not sure if 36 oz represents 10 servings from the bread group/day. You do the math... While it is true these are not popular food choices, I do not believe they represent what we in the US consider a month's worth of groceries, even if you ate them exclusively. And realistically, does anyone believe that only the WIC receipient eats these foods, and everyone else in the household buys separate groceries? WIC is a SUPPLEMENTAL food program. Infants receive up to 403 fl oz ABM concentrate, OR up to 9# powder, OR up to 806 floz ready to feed. For some babies this is enough to last all month. for others not. Again I have no experience mixing or feeding formula, so I do not know if all the babies for whom this is enough are getting over-diluted ABM or not.... Do these quantities hold true with coupon useage?
