Jan, Re: your inquiry about an AAP statement. (By the way, you inadvertently left off the word "IF" when you copied part of my first sentence.....which happens to change the meaning of my thought). Press Release 8/4/97 "Parents who sleep with their baby in an adult bed do not reduce the risk of (SIDS).... . In a new policy statement developed with the National Institue of Child Health and Human Development, the AAP acknowledges that bed sharing can alter and synchronize sleep patterns of mother and baby and encourage breast feeding (*a positive!), but points out that no scientific studies prove bed sharing reduces SIDS. In fact, under certain conditions, bed sharing may actually increase SIDS risk, especially if the baby sleeps on its stomach on a comforter or other soft surface. The AAP also warns that, unlike cribs, adult beds are not designed to meet safety standards for infants and may carry a risk of accidental entrapment and suffocation." *** I'm concerned that, if the scenario I mentioned in my last post should occur, with the above statement not sounding all to supportive of co-sleeping (i.e. the dangers portion), how might this impact giving the info. Should develop a handout and have mom sign that she was given specific precautions? Should we document to the nth degree? Is all this necessary? Could we still be sued even if we did our best to "cover all the bases? I think that this is a question we need to consider. Again, if anyone has a credible legal viewpoint, please post. Jan, I agree with your thought about a statement warning of the potential for serious illness, disability, or death (paraphrased) if an infant is given ABM.
