I may be totally off base here, but Goldenweiser and Yudina both sound
like Jewish names.  Is it possible that, appearing as Jews (whatever their
religious beliefs were), they felt constrained to live down any suspicions
as to their devotion to official doctrine, and hence to overcompensate w/
denunciations of apparent deviations therefrom?
