All of you who are over working for your hospital on your time and energy
need to read this mo JHL editorial. The title is "Closet Consulting and
Other Enabling Behaviors". It says a lot that none of us want to hear
about enabling the hospital powers that be to continue to use you. Yes,
USE you! for FREE! It gives steps to implement to change your situation.
Somewhere we have to come to the realization that our services are
valuable and the health care system benefits from lactation services,
therefore the health care system needs to pay for these services
adequately.

Letters from consumers are extremely important, both kinds ie: to say the
LC helped me and my baby is BFing or the LC was too busy to help me and
blah, blah blah happened and this is why I am so disappointed in delivering
at your institution. Delivering a baby at a hospital is a way that the mom
becomes attached to a hospital (loyalty). She will then come to same
hospital for other services. Don't underestimate the power of the consumer
- the hospital doesn't!

The air is getting thin up here and I need to go to work as a HCP!
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
