Was just discussing with a fellow colleague that fact that we really do need to know how to support a mother who for whatever reason (eg has breast cancer, is on medication that is contr-indicated, etc) bottle feeds her baby. What do we tell her re frequency of bottle feeds, the practicalities of preparing formula, cleaning equipment etc, what formula to use and why, how to tell when baby needs more (or less)? If we believe that formula feeding is dangerous then we need to know how to make it safer for the mother and baby if mother has to bottle feed. I would be interested to hear what others think we should know to ensure the well being of the babies we work with. Regards Ellen McIntyre IBCLC, South Australia
