Many of these soldiers and officers were told that the city of New York had been destroyed. They, as captives, were very disapointed to find that their government had deceived them. They were disenchanted. Four graves mark the western end of the Fort Drum reservation. They are four Germans and one Italian. They all died within six months of each other.
