I have also heard (seems to me it came from a blacksmith working at restored Fort Langley near Vancouver, B.C.), that dirt floors in a blacksmith shop had the additional advantage of being softer (would "give" more than, say, a stone, brick or concrete floor) for the workers who had to stand on them all day long.
