Sheila: Allegra (fexfenadine) has recently been introduced and is touted as a "new improved" seldane (terfenadine). If I recall the drug company literature, it is a metabolite of terfenadine which apparently does not have some of the worrisome interactions with other medications that terfenadine has had. Since it is so new, I really can't comment on its safety in bf, but my usual question is: why does she need to take it? What else has she tried? Has she used the extremely effective and much safer steroid or cromolyn nasal sprays? What about some other antihistamines with better track records? Although the non-sedating antihistamines such as terfenadine, astemizole (hismanal), and claritin (can't for the life of me remember the generic name) are extremely popular because of their non-sedating properties, they are not necessarily the most effective. Just some thoughts. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
