Last week I posted about the doctor who refused the mom nystatin ointment for herself when diagnosing thrush in her infant (her chief complaint to me was suddden onset of sore nipples with tiny blisters so I sent her to the doctor for confirmation and treatment of thrush). He also told her to stop nursing for several days and to use vaseline on her nipples. She had no intention of not nursing. I figure that this petroleum product is not compatible with breastfeeding since it is for external use only (and not easily wiped off) and also not appropriate for use with thrush since it keeps air out making it easier for the yeast to thrive. Does anybody have any information I could use when writing to the doctor. I have to be very careful about what goes out of my office but I feel I must address this with him. I would appreciate any information and opinions. Jill Meltzer, R.N. Breastfeeding Coordinator WIC
