There are a large number of ways in which coins were made,
depending on when, where, and for whom they were made. For
example, coins have have been cut from stone (including some
very heavy wheel stones), cast in sand molds (sand casted),
made from die casted metal or made using die stamped metal.
One expert who has a knowledge about coins that date from
the early Roman period to the present is Mr. Guy Whidden.
Guy doesn't have a e-mail address but can be reached by
snail mail at 7504 Rockwood Road, Frederick, Maryland.
