Thanks to all who wrote. It sounds as though I can use an oil
instead of the soap, which is great. I'll have to experiment.

Is lemon oil the stuff that comes from the lemon fruit and has
the wonderfully lemony smell & flavour, or is there a 'language'
problem -- maybe it's a wood oil?

In the UK, we tend to use 'teak oil' for treating wood, however
we'd use a lot more than a few drops and it would normally be as
a finish in its own right, so I guess this is different.
