> My beekeeping mentor told me as a warning how his bees very much disliked his string trimmer being used around the hives. I tried using my string trimmer near my hives with no negative displays from the bees.

I've heard this too. In my experience, they tend to get feisty when the grass and weeds being whacked get thrown onto the hive entrance. I've found that leaning a queen excluder against the entrance, screening it from the thrown grass, does a nice job of keeping them calm for the time that I'm close enough to the hive entrance to cause a commotion.
