my comments
Can not recall the source but 72 hours is what I remember. Marzz would have suggested part of the problem could have been a very high egg laying queen. Taber might have pointed towards NO communication holes in those frames. 

I would suggest that sugar syrup will not be picked up by bees at tempatures below 55 degrees.

As you suggest there are multiple varibles to consider.
