First of all, I don't know if I ever said Happy Birthday to Lactnet. This is our 20th year of providing free professional connection services for breastfeeding professionals and others who have a professional interest in lactation and its science and practice. Happy Birthday!! to us. I had the idea to start Lactnet because I had a friend in a rural area, far from me, who was a LLLeader, and now is a very skilled IBCLC. She needed some connection and networking, and so Lactnet was born from my desire to help her, and now we have over 3500 members, from over 52 countries around the world. For teaching pumping to mothers, I would first tell them that they do not have to pump. Now, moms get pumps from insurance cos. If they do not need to pump often, I would give them the option of not doing so. Discuss the merits of using the pump and bottles for only the times they need to be away from young babies, breastfeeding often when they are with baby. Discuss merits of night nursing when employed during daytimes. Show how to feed correctly and safely at night. I would tell them of Dr. McKenna's work re: co sleeping...which I believe prolongs and enhances breastfeeding for mothers employed away from babies. Of course explain the pump, and its workings, and simplify the process for them. Teach paced bottle feeding. http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/feeding-tools/bottle-feeding/ is a fabulous site with wonderful handouts. I see that there are bottles that claim to be this or that, but I never thought one was much different than another. MOthers are able to control flow with just a lowering of the fluid...and attention to the baby's cues while eating. Notice if baby is getting too much too fast. Talk about flow preference. And how much the baby actually needs, as opposed to how much the baby will take. Just my .02. Kathleen B Bruce RN BSN IBCLC [log in to unmask] Listmom some days back...
