Doesn't the state of Alabama prohibit the import of any bees? Last I heard, trucks could drive through, but couldn't unload hives. A number of other jurisdictions restrict apiary placement. Competition for good sites is aggressive out West. We in my county are pursuing restrictions. Here's how it is. There are only a few serious beekeepers in my county and about 150 hobbyists. We generally respect each other's locations to avoid competition, running only 2-3 dozen hives per yard. But out-of-county commercial guys think nothing of coming in and setting 1000 hives right on top of us, which kills locations that we may have had for 30 years. They don't live here, pay taxes here, or support local agriculture, so we feel that we have the right to protect our apiaries. -- Randy Oliver Grass Valley, CA www.ScientificBeekeeping.com *********************************************** The BEE-L mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software.
