This is a common position used for paced feeding. In the NICU population it has been noticed that the babies do much better than compared to the 'normal' bottle feeding position. In the side laying hold the bottle doesn't have a continuous drip and instead the baby pooling the milk in the back of their throat they are able to do so in their cheek Iif needed). Their respiratory rate, heart rate and oxygenation levels stay normal whereas when in an upright position there are more occurrences of increased heart rate, apneic episodes and lowered oxygenation spells. When watching baby you can also see a clear suck, swallow, breathe pattern.
