My thoughts: I know it's a parody, but who actually acts like that? I have seen this on FB posts, but those are easy enough for all mothers to avoid. I feel like with the "mommy wars" a lot of it is personal perception. Parenting is such a hard yet important job that mothers are constantly FEELING judged. This is especially true for women who choose to formula feed. They are inundated with breastfeeding information (health benefits, emotional benefits, etc), which is a good thing, but this can make those who choose not to breastfeed feel as though they are not doing the best thing for their baby or they are inferior as a mother. This video is definitely geared towards those women who have chosen formula feeding. Abbott's goal is to normalize formula feeding and make it appear equal to breastfeeding. They are a formula company - their ultimate marketing goal is to market their product. Look at how they portray breastfeeding women in the video - everybody is covered up. This is unrealistic, but to a formula feeder who does not know the trials and tribulations of breastfeeding (like nursing an older baby/toddler who wants nothing to do with that cover), it adds to the stigma that breastfeeding should be done in private. That message right there might make them feel glad they chose formula. I am not sure how this video would be helpful for WIC staff. Maybe an inservice on communication and counseling skills would be more beneficial. You can't "push" anything on a mother - all you can do is provide her with education, answer her questions in an honest and unbiased way, and then let her make her own choice. Tonight I learned that another staff member is planning on using it in a WIC staff meeting to address concerns that one staff member is too pushy with clients about breastfeeding. So I will have to watch it...but not tonight before bed. I would greatly appreciate the thoughts of you who have watched it. Is this a good idea to show it? What could be said about the video before/after it is shown (if it is shown)? Does anyone have any other suggestions of youtube type videos that could convey a similar message that are NOT formula commercials? Help!!! This staff meeting is Tuesday! Michele -- *Michele L.
