Jan writes: Dr. John Cannell seems to be pretty transparent. Maybe ask him if he's being paid by Nature Made, or Nature's Sunshine or Nature's Moonlight or any of the other herbal, vitamin type people. Or Kirkland brand which is the CostCo brand.... ~~~ You are right, he is very transparent, if one thinks to look, which I believe most people don't. He has his own line of Vit D supplements, and the Council itself is sponsored by two other companies that make supplements, including a BioTech Pharma company, a company that makes Vit D test kits, and one that makes tanning beds. Supplements, like formula, are often cheap to produce. They can be extremely helpful, like the Vit A supplements in the studies Susan Burger has mentioned. But in a for-profit system, with huge companies with shareholders, there is always the push to sell more, to expand markets. Temporary helps become a way of life, rather than the Herculean work of changing the conditions that might have led to the problem in the first place. Sometimes our effect on the environment is so devastating, we are actually stuck in the "new abnormal." New moms are suggested not to take their infants out in the sun too much, nor are they to use sunscreen. We need Vit D. Human milk is not deficient in Vit D ( which makes human milk sound weak or bad) rather the conditions in which we are designed to get Vit D have been irrevocably shifted. These are complicated issues, but I think they are further complicated by the knowledge that there are companies and individuals who stand to make huge profits working on them. If supplements are cheap, then it might take a lot of sales to make the money, but if we have a whole generation of folks lacking in Vit D, that might make up the difference. I am not saying that the statements made are untrue, but I am saying that they bear careful scrutiny knowing what we know about corporations ( which despite the law, I don't believe are people.) Hope that clarifies what I wrote.
