In North Alabama, I have gives in total sun and in the same field, I have
hives in shade after 1 PM.

Last year, 2011 season,
hives in the sun made very little honey while I had 2-3 supers on the
partial shaded hives.

Bees have difficulty keeping hives cool in total sun. A stream was running
less than 300 feet of the hives.
