ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions. ***************************************************************************** Astronomy Education Review Celebrates 10th Anniversary _______________________________________________ Journal Has Readers in 98 Countries Astronomy Education Review (AER), the on-line journal/magazine about astronomy education and outreach, published by the American Astronomical Society, celebrates its 10th anniversary of publication this fall. The first paper in the journal, founded by Andrew Fraknoi (Foothill College) and Sidney Wolff (NOAO), came on line in October 2001. After being published by the National Optical Astronomy Observatories, with support from NASA and other organizations, AER became a publication of the American Astronomical Society, the U.S. professional organization of astronomers, in 2009. It can be read at the web address: http://aer.aas.org . Wolff retired at that time, but Fraknoi continues to assist the editor-in-chief, Thomas Hockey, of the University of Northern Iowa. The journal now publishes the overwhelming majority of research papers about astronomy education, by authors from around the world. It also features shorter pieces on innovative techniques and materials, resource guides and reviews, dissertation abstracts, op-ed pieces, letters and announcements. So far, AER is free to both authors and readers; its contents can be printed out or saved to various databases without charge. In the first 8 months of 2011, the journal had readers in 98 countries and had 14,000 unique visitors to its site. All contributions (except announcements) are peer-reviewed. Among the papers and articles published in the journal recently are: * A National Study Assessing the Teaching and Learning of Introductory Astronomy: The Connection between Student Demographics and Learning * Learning about the Seasons: A Guide for Teachers and Curriculum Developers * Eratosthenes 2009/2010: An Old Experiment in Modern Times * Seven Concepts for Effective Astronomy Teaching * What It Would Take to Increase the Number of High School Astronomy Courses: A Survey of Principals and a Comparison to Astronomy Teachers, and a Prescription for Change * Covering the Standards: Astronomy Teachers‚ Preparation and Beliefs * Astrology Beliefs among Undergraduate Students * Do Concept Inventories Actually Measure Anything? * Enhancing Student Performance in an Online Introductory Astronomy Course with Video Demonstrations * Galaxy Zoo: Exploring the Motivations of Citizen Science Volunteers For the future, a new goal for the journal is to increase the number of papers on research in education and outreach outside the formal classroom.
