RE. baby "well" after being put on alimentum I found an algorithm for the diagnosis and management of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) in exclusively breast-fed infants by Vandenplas Y et al. Arch Dis Child 2007: 92: 902-908 Which is interesting/helpful but in the end says "refer to pediatric specialist of diagnosis and treatment, in the mean time: elimination diet in mothers (No CMP) plus Calcium supplement." More helpful perhaps would be an article from the Peoria Journal Star pjstar.com from Friday Oct 8, 2010 which is titled Good vs. bad bacteria. They worked with probiotics recommended by their ped gastro Dr. Khaled. Hope this helps! Polly Kocher, BS, IBCLC From: Mary Coutts <[log in to unmask]> Subject: baby "well" after being put on alimentum My name is Mary Coutts. Posting for the first time in years. Received a call from a mom who's 3 month old has been very "fussy, unsettled, unhappy, gassy" beginning at around 2 weeks of age. She discussed symptoms with ped who put her on something for gerd. Thought it might have been helping but did not. Has since gone to a gastro doc who suggested she put baby on alimentum (protein hydrolysate formula)Is this a formula that "covers" all possible food allergies or only milk and soy protein allergies? Baby was a "different baby" within 12 hours per mom. Has been on only alimentum for one week now and mom states she has a very happy baby. She has been pumping but wants to go back to breastfeeding. She said she eliminated all dairy for one week before going to gastro with no change in baby at that time. She is finding her milk supply going down. I gave her suggestions for boosting her milk production. Would you suggest she do a strict elimination diet or start with the dairy again and see if perhaps giving it a minimum of 2 weeks would be the answer? She doesn't sound like she wants to take 2 weeks to see if it works and then turn around and have to try something else. Plus in her mind she thinks already it won't work because of the one week trial she already did...Perhaps I just answered my own question? Elimination diet? I have not worked with anyone before with a strict elimination diet. For those of you who have, would you please share the process. What about pancreatic enzyme supplement? Anxious for help from all of you much smarter and more experienced than I....Thank you very much.
