Formic acid is like any other acids or pesticides. They will not be safe to handle if you don't follow the label. Therefore, any label includes instructions on handling and warnings. Of course if the applicator did not follow instructions, the outcomes will be expected. Please keep in mind any label also include information of how to handle accidents and steps to be taken to remedy the problem including going to a hospital for a medical help.
In the last 15-20 years working with formic acid, I am aware of two accidents. One of the accidents involved me. However, it was my mistake. Oh boy, I learned very quickly that I should read the label first and follow instructions.

The bottom line, follow the label and play it safe. Cheers!
