Bridges Vision Research Volume 5, Issues 6-7, June 1965, Pages 239-251 It explains how the visual pigments/spectra for different specimens vary among schoolmates (in species such as minnows). One conclusion drawn: that although individuals have limited spectral sensitivity, as a group they have a significantly wider sensitivity allowing the school to have better vision than the individuals, hence easier to spot predators, food resources, etc. Not to mention many eyes in general--the compound eye writ large.
