Dear all,

Yesterday I was confronted by interested members of the local press in Aruba with an intriguing question.

As corruption is such a pervasive and destructive issue in many developing and developed countries and whistle-blowers and human rights, environmental and anti-corruption activists are persecuted and manhandled in many countries how much of a case can be made for web sites like WikiLeaks to expose national, regional and international issues?

If we omit military, conflict and national security issues and just stick to general human rights, environmental and anti-corruption issues does the WikLeaks concept help to further the three causes?

I think this is a valid question and merits and answer from the anti-corruption circles

I myself, who deals with all three issues could not provide a clear-cut answer to this question.

Obviously the WikiLeaks concept strikes a cord with many a news media staffer for its boldness, directness and candor and indiscriminate exposure, yet I also sense that many reporters are somewhat aware of the uneasy boundaries between general interest and the security issues with the typical items exposed so far by WikiLeaks.

Amnesty International made some remarks about the extent to which exposure is warranted and desirable.

And the press being the press I feel we cannot leave this question unanswered.

I would appreciate receiving your thoughts on this issue.
