Dear all, Many thanks for the feedback so far on the newsletter. Building on Toby's proposal, we'd like to propose a slightly different variation: (1) We open up the newsletter committee membership to about five volunteers, aiming to be as flexible and open as possible. (If its six or seven, that's fine too.) In our experience from the CoSPs there are usually only that number of people who will be really active. (2) If there are more than, say, eight volunteers, we make a list and send it to the Coordination Committee for decision. It would be very interesting to hear views of other members of this working group on this proposal. Please note that we will have to produce the first newsletter, possibly the first two, without the Coordination Committee being in place. It would also be very interesting to hear whether the group feels that we should keep the newsletter name "Monitor" that we have used in the past. Late today or tomorrow morning, Phoebe will send the package to the whole Coalition-if we could hear from you before that, she could take account of any further advice. The newsletter looks fine to me. I am one of the perhaps a declining number of people who still believe in content (so I believe it will sink or swim more on content than look!) I wonder if it might not make more sense for the Coordination Committee to select the Newsletter Committee. It may be a bit unwieldy for the Membership to do this as they will meet only once a year. We have been busy here in Berlin in preparing the ground for some Coalition activities and I hope this group will be able to provide feedback on some drafts before we circulated them to the whole Coalition. I also hope you won't feel "bombarded". The DRAFT documents that I'd like to send you for comment, starting today include: (1) Newsletter concept note and sample layout: attached here and please see the transmission note below from Phoebe Hardefeldt, my new colleague in the Conventions programme who prepared these documents. Please do send your comments by cob next Tuesday 26 October 2010 (2) Rules of Procedure for Coalition-next week (3) Proposed timetable for Coalition next steps - next week (4) Revised Coalition membership application form-next week (5) Application for funding for CSOs preparing inputs to first year of UNCAC review process-next week (6) Short questionnaire for CSOs preparing inputs to first year of UNCAC review process On another point, two of you have approached me about the possibility of receiving TI funding to attend the IACC and the Coalition meeting on 14 November. I very much regret that TI does not have any funding to support Coalition members interested in attending those meetings. The UNDEF travel funding that we have received is for the first in-person meeting of the Coordination Committee and also includes a little funding to support Coalition participation in the CoSP in Morocco in 2011. Looking forward to your feedback on the attached Newsletter concept note and sample layout. It's an in-text newsletter (ie it would be sent embedded in the email, not as an attachment) but a pdf version can be generated by clicking on a link. There are a couple of decisions to make: Newsletter name It has been called The Monitor in the past - it would be great to get the Coalition's thoughts on whether we continue with this name or have a new one, and if so what? Circulation of the first edition In the schedule I put November 2010 for the first edition. I am recommending that we have this edition ready by the IACC to be used there as an advocacy tool. We could include for example articles on the UNCAC Review process, current developments within the Coalition, and upcoming Coalition activities. Producing it by November is a very tight time-frame though, and would probably mean a smaller newsletter with less input by Coalition members. The alternative is to schedule the first edition for December, which would provide more time for submissions from Coalition members but would mean there it is not available at the IACC. Circulation schedule I've scheduled one newsletter every 3 months from November. I propose that when this doesn't coincide with major events (COSP etc) we could circulate a special edition at that time. The alternative is to re-do the schedule to try to ensure it coincides with major events.
