Over the years I worked with 2 moms with breast trauma. One was burned as a young child, nipple destroyed. She breastfed 3 babies quite sucessfully with one breast. The non functioning side became engorged and then involuted. It is interesting to note with 2nd and 3rd babies it seemed to know it wouldn't have to work and did not engorge as badly as first time. 2nd mom had a nasty abcess with 1st baby, with poor surgical care, severing the ducts in the lower half of her breast. This part became engorged with each subsequent baby and then involuted. W used to joke that she nursed just fine with 1 1/2 breasts. She went on to become a LLLL.
