Karen writes: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfmoms/detail?entry_id=43677 Karen and all, Warning: this is going to sound nasty, but is not directed at anyone here: Honestly, I feel like I have read everything I ever need to about bottlefeeding mothers not getting enough support. All our local LLLLeaders, as well as the local IBCLCs bend over backwards to make sure mothers know whatever options they need to or seek to know about in a supportive atmosphere. I can't stand another comment like "I don't respect ANY ( emphasis mine) breastfeeding proponents because my one friend had a bad experience." I'm exhausted reading about how great doctors are who dismiss that there is anything happening after three months of breastfeeding and "you gave her all she needed anyway." The ignorance in the medical community continues to shift blame to us and we are called "unsupportive" in ours. If we tell the truth, no matter how lovingly we do it, we are the bad people. If the HCP community in a hospital does not have the time to address the issue of going back to work for a mom with a 4 month old, then they are called unsupportive, when the MD could easily handle such a thing, or local support groups. Maybe there are a few people out there who will not give a mom the help she needs to use a bottle safely for any reason, and try to preserve her preserve breastfeeding while she works, but I don't know them. We bear the nasty words and the ridiculous generalizations of wounded people who cast their woundedness wide and blame a whole group for the ignorance or attitude of one, or they misinterpret the truth as we know it, for dogmatism. Moms may have had a bad experience with a pediatrician ( one local one often makes mothers cry) and yet I've never heard a mother say she hates all pediatricians. I guess the one good thing in these rants is that mothers are becoming aware that bottlefeeding does matter, in terms of flow rate, and being responsive to a baby's needs rather than just pouring in liquid as fast as possible in as few feeds as possible. I will hang on to this like a life raft, the next time I am getting flooded with this kind of venting.
