My oldest is 21 so I didn't answer the first thread but being a fairly recently accediated LC I have noticed interesting things when I tell people what I do. Those with children near my kids ages say, "why do people need help, we just did it", people whose kids are a few years younger say, "I wish I had known you then, I had a lot of trouble or it didn't work". The young moms I work with at WIC say "I want to try but I don't think it will work". One thing that has changed is the young moms watch the "Baby Channel" or what ever that cable station is called. Everyone there has problems, of course, it's better TV. Most know people who have tried and "failed", which lowers their expectations and makes it more likely they will have problems or give up. Also, those of us with older kids sought out LLL and books like Karen Pryor's because we wanted to breastfeed, now moms are encouaged to breastfeed by others - family, friends, WIC, some doctors, etc. and they are not as committed to something they are doing for someone else (not their baby). Like others mentioned there are certainly more birth interventions and C-sections and don't forget the study that just came out about pediatricains who are not supporting breastfeeding. Then there is the fact that many of us were stay at home moms, something also difficult for many today. So many reasons, I'll give one more that goes along with the pediatrician one, my friend said to me the other day, it seems our kids were the last "generation" that didn't all have diagnosis, jaundice, reflux, low birth weight, high birth weight, etc., etc. what's the first answer of many docs., give formula.
