Not just sunny San Diego, but in South East Queensland (Queensland being the 
Sunshine State), 40% were found to be Vit D deficient (below 50nmol/l).

My GP (the Integrative/Nutritional Medicine one) says that after 
confirmation with blood test, people deficient in Vit D can take 30,000 i.u. 
per week max, in one tablet (available here from a compounding chemist)... 
VitD3 (cholecalciferol) is far more effective than vitamin D2 
(ergocalciferol). A healthy level of vitamin D is over 120 nmol/l.
