Brazilian press says that French conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier will become the Music Director of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, the Osesp, succeeding John Neschling, who has held the post for the last 12 years. Neschling, who was fired by e-mail by Fernando Henrique Cardoso (former Brazilian President and now President of the board of the Orchestra), said he was in Switzerland with his wife when he got the e-mail, and that he was 'shocked' and 'hurt' with the news. Neschling transformed the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra into the best orchestra of Latin America, made several acclaimed recordings of Villa Lobos for the label BIS, a cycle of Beethoven symphonies for the label Biscoito Fino, and made the orchestra known in the USA and Europe. This is sad news for the fans of classical music in Brazil. Yours, Wilson Pereira Natal, Brazil. *********************************************** The CLASSICAL mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's HDMail High Deliverability Mailer for reliable, lightning fast mail delivery.
