It has been my experience that at least since 40 years ago in Madison
Wisconsin, the standing ovation is standard in the USA; the audience is
demanding (and nearly always gets) an encore.

On the other hand (apropos of nothing) in a church in Austin Texas about
ten years ago, a visiting string quartet (may have been the Coull) played
Webern twice for the audience (can't remember whether it was the Five
Movements or the Six Bagatelles), explaining that they were doing so
because 'you don't get many chances to hear this music', and, if memory
serves, moved closer to the audience for the second performance. The
playing was beautiful, the audience charmed and appreciative.
