I believe the posting below is in reference to my previous post but I could be just making an incorrect assumption. I was not referring to an 8 month old. A one and a half year to two year old with failure to thrive, that has never initiated spoon or finger feeding, preferring to only feed at the breast is appropriate for a multidiscipline feeding evaluation. (AAP recommendations exclusive breastmilk until 6 months, then the initiation of complimentary foods with breast milk still primary source through one year of age.) Keep in mind that our hospital and outpatient program has a very large multi state referral area and the normal breastfeeding situations are handled by PCP's, private LC's, LLL support, delivering hospital LC programs. The patients that I ususally see are sick infants and toddlers. One or more pounds under birth weight at 2 months of age, 75% on the growth chart from infant through 6months to below 0 on the scale at 14 months. It is usually the extreme cases that I am consulted not the normal long term breastfeeders. Angie Sue Pace <[log in to unmask]> Subject: RE EXTREME BREASTFEEDING My 28 yr old daughter didn't eat anything until she was 8 months-not unusual at all now but then it was a big deal-my Health Visitor(UK) told me I would miss the window of opportunity and that she would never eat normally if I didn't start soon-it was 'normal' then to give spoon feedings from 3-4 months. She started with her hands and my food when she wanted to-more experimenting and playing than eating, no problems. What a contrast that approach of early spoon feeding to the work Gill Rapley in the UK has done, her approach is what many mum's already knew but were deterred from doing by HCP's and their research. All my babies did the same the youngest is 7 and we have never had food issues. CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE.
