Hi I am a newly qualified IBCLC and a midwife with almost 30 yrs experience. I am interested in when babies re weighed, the rationale for the timing and intervention points. In my practice I have hardly ever weighed a baby before day 5. I would weigh sooner if output and observed breastfeeds were causing concern to me. (by observed breastfeeds I mean frequency, duration, assessment of latch, evidence of letdown and observation of more than one whole breastfeed in a 24 hr period, condition of mum's nipples and breasts). Virtually all babies I see are with mum from birth, no routine intervention at birth and at least one hour skin to skin at birth with several more periods later. Babies at high risk for neonatal hypoglycaemia have AC blood sugar levels and are supplemented in the first instance with expressed colostrum. After 3 good sugars they are discontinued. There is full rooming in no nursery available and feeding is baby led.
