At one point I had over 80 recordings of Mahler's 4th symphony. The interesting thing about that is that when I discovered and first loved the piece, there was only one commercially available: Walter's 1945 recording, transferred from 78s. And that kind of collecting becomes indefensible. Where to put all the CDs, and when will I ever listen to them again? O to be one of those aristocrats living forever in the family mansion, rather than moving from Kenosha to Madison to Surbiton, Teddington and Yaxham in England, to Texas and now Iowa... If I had ever record I ever owned I'd have to have two more rooms on my house.
