At one point I had over 80 recordings of Mahler's 4th symphony.  The
interesting thing about that is that when I discovered and first loved
the piece, there was only one commercially available: Walter's 1945
recording, transferred from 78s.  And that kind of collecting becomes
indefensible.  Where to put all the CDs, and when will I ever listen to
them again?  O to be one of those aristocrats living forever in the
family mansion, rather than moving from Kenosha to Madison to Surbiton,
Teddington and Yaxham in England, to Texas and now Iowa...  If I had
ever record I ever owned I'd have to have two more rooms on my house.
