Hi All, I spoke with the mother today – she confirmed stridor and told me she has an appt with baby’s regular Ped on Wednesday (5-9). She took my information very seriously, was grateful that someone else agreed with her and actually listened. It was not her regular Ped that first told her that snoring and whistling were fine in a newborn. While we were on the phone baby started snoring – it was so loud! He was nursing in the football hold so I suggested that she tip his head back a bit – it helped some. Then he came off the breast, started in with stridor. Mom put him up on her shoulder and he calmed down and breathing became more normal. We talked about an increased risk of SIDS due to his breathing issues and I encouraged her to co-sleep 100% of the time. Currently they hade been letting him sleep in a seat of some kind next to the bed and then when he woke for his first feed she’d bring him to bed. He sleeps much better and his breathing is more regular when he is with her…I encouraged her to take notice of that and keep him with her going over safe co-sleeping protocols. This mom is very encouraged now – she is trusting herself even more now, thank goodness! She is considering doing an in home visit so we can play around with different positions to help baby. So my questions to you: I have my own ideas on positioning for this little guy – but would like as many suggestions as possible. We have no diagnosis (yet!) so my goal is to improve his ability to feed well and mother’s ability to feed him well, and reduce the snoring and stridor. This must be done keeping in mind that mom has a very active 2 yr old to attend to as well…Any descriptions will be helpful! Re: feeding and weight – yes I did explain to mother that tho ¾ of and ounce per day avg. wt gain is good, he’d probably be gaining better if he did not have to work so hard to breathe. Robin – you are correct – Dr is not happy with a reasonable weight gain – they want 1 ounce. What floors me is that they are so worried that 3/4 oz avg wt gain per day is not enough (when we know it is fine in a healthy baby) but are completely ignoring moms description and request for help re: a potentially serious and, in moms own words “potentially life threatening” condition! Go figure… Hopefully her regular Ped will be considerably better. I don’t know this particular Ped so have no clue. I did tell mother however, that I would be happy to go with her if needed – and that a consult would give us more information to give the Dr… Thanks again for all the input. It is extremely helpful!
