Deryk Barker responds to Nina Costanza: >>Forgive me if this is too simplistic, as I have enjoyed the eloquent >>investigations on this topic... but the reason art exists in my mind >>(visual, aural, movement, film) is because what is being expressed cannot >>be adequately addressed in word language. > >Thesis 7 (the final one) of Wittgenstein's Tractatus >Logic-philosophicus (I can't recall the German): > >Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must remain silent. But in this case (and especially regarding the context here) the German is essential: "Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, daruber muss man schweigen." I don't know a decent English synonym for the verb "schweigen", but it means "to not speak", it doesn't (necessarily) mean to remain silent. I think I'll adopt this variation (and Nina Costanza may concur): "Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, daruber muss man spielen." (If you can't say it, play it.) Rick
